Audio books

Lately I've been changing my thinking towards audio books.

I use to think that audio books weren't for me because I am more than capable of reading the book on my own and I prefer to have my own voices and settings when reading. Another thing that always deterred me from picking up an audio book is the pace at which some are read in; I like going at my own pace, being able to read faster at certain points when the story picks up or slowing down and really digesting the story I'm reading.

More so lately however, I have been intrigued by the thought of audio books. I found the audio book for Orange is the New Black while I was reading that book and ended up listening to a good chunk of it to finish out the book. I used it for a few reasons: I needed to get the book done to return it to the library, I needed to get it done to participate in a book club discussion, and I just wasn't feeling it at the time. The audio book was a good outlet to get the book done but also allowed me to multitask.

I'm coming to the realization that audio books are great....to a point. There are some stories that I doubt I'll pick up the audio book unless I've already read the book but others I don't think I'd mind em. Audio books give you the opportunity to multitask, as long as the other task you are doing isn't thought provoking.

For example: The other day I put on the audio book of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets while I was shopping and then while I was wrapping Christmas gifts. It was wonderful. I was able to 'read' the entire book while also getting all of my wrapping complete.

I can see myself getting more audio books from the library in the future to listen to while on the road, or maybe even at work. I'm finding that I can mindfully do things while listening to an audio book instead of constantly having Netflix on in the background. (Now I'm not hating on Netflix but it's nice to break the addiction a little)
